Youth Media Contest

01

Examine Self & Civic Identity

Youth can start by reflecting on the themes addressed by Courageous RI including practicing media literacy and active listening, celebrating diversity, recognizing and resisting disinformation and propaganda, and preventing violent extremism.

Ask yourself, how are these issues relevant to my experience? How do they affect my community?

02

Identify an Issue

After youth have spent time exploring these themes and making connections to their own experiences, the next step is to identify an issue to focus on in their project.

Ask yourself, what issue am I passionate about?

Where would I like to use my voice to enact positive change?

03

Research & Investigate

Youth are encouraged to conduct research on their chosen issue in order to inform the message their project will communicate. Research might include reading news articles, reviewing media coverage or statistical data, conducting interviews or surveys, and so on.

Ask yourself, what do I want to learn about my chosen topic?

What information about the issue would be helpful as I create my message?

04

Choose a Focus & Format

After youth have spent time exploring these themes and making connections to their own experiences, the next step is to identify a focus issue and format for their project.

Ask yourself, what do I want to communicate about my chosen topic?

What format (VIDEO, AUDIO, PRINT, GRAPHIC DESIGN / PHOTOGRAPHY ) would best communicate this message?

05

Create the Project

Youth will create their project, using their existing skills as well as learning new techniques and technologies to express themselves. Youth may work individually or collaborate with others. Youth can seek feedback from their teachers or mentors and are encouraged to reflect on what are the objectives of their project and what they are learning from making it.

Ask yourself, what creative decisions will allow me to engage my audience and effectively communicate my perspective?

What am I learning from making this project?

06

Reflect & Share

When youth finish their project, they will write a 300 word 'artist statement' in which they reflect on their project, considering its connections to Courageous RI's themes, the creative decisions the youth made, the project's intended impact, and what they learned from the experience. Projects will be submitted via Film Freeway by May 15th.

Ask yourself, how does my project connect with Courageous RI's themes?

What creative decisions did I make to effectively communicate my message?

What impact do I hope my project will have on my community?

What did I learn from making my project?
